WASHINGTON, D.C. — The LEAD1 Association (“LEAD1”), which represents the athletics directors of the 130-member schools of the Football Bowl Subdivision (“FBS”), today released the following statement on behalf of President & CEO Tom McMillen regarding the events that took place on January 6th, 2021 in Washington, D.C.

“I strongly condemn yesterday’s assault on our sacred place for democracy.  As a former member of Congress, I was both fearful for the safety of my friends and horrified that our Capitol was attacked by the very people whose rights are guaranteed and protected in that historic building, including the right to peacefully protest. Violence can never be an acceptable response.  Yesterday’s events must be the flash point that finally leads us to move away from mentality of hate that has sidelined civil political discourse in this country. The new administration and the new Congress provide an opportunity to turn the page and focus on finding common ground and civility, and remembering that we’re all Americans.”
