The 60-minute presentation took place on Monday, September 10, 2018.

WASHINGTON – The LEAD1 Association, which represents the athletics directors of the 131-member schools of the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), hosted a webinar on Monday, September 10, to explore some of the inherent risks within sports medicine administration. The webinar, Sports Medicine and Oversight of Conditioning, Practice and Games, had approximately 90 participants from LEAD1 schools.

The webinar presenters included Dr. James Borchers, Co-Founder for U.S. Council for Athletes’ Health; Dr. Christopher Kaeding, Co-Founder for U.S. Council for Athletes’ Health; Joe Castiglione, VP for Intercollegiate Athletics Programs, University of Oklahoma; Dan Radakovich, Director of Athletics, Clemson University; Janine Oman, Deputy Director of Athletics, Ohio State University; and Scott Anderson, Head Athletic Trainer, University of Oklahoma.

The presenters discussed the importance of independent medical care and proper processes with respect to medical certification, assessment of medical risk, collaboration among athletics department personnel, and supervision of health-related practices.

“Since 2000, more than 80 student-athletes have died from indirect causes related to their sport,” said Tom McMillen, President and CEO of the LEAD1 Association. “It was important for us to have this webinar and continue the conversation for the benefit and welfare of our student-athletes.”
