SMU is known for its tailgate scene. Ranked as the best in Texas by Dallas Morning News and among the best by Southern Living, the Mustangs were looking for a way to bring that social energy into the stadium. Thus, “The Stables” were born.
It started with the students, because students are what makes college athletics unique and should be included in the game atmosphere.
Partnering with BlockParty, a group already working to provide tailgate and fan experiences within SMU Athletics, the team drew inspiration from the PGATOUR to create “The Stables” as they exist today.
“The space allows students to interact with each other more and to move about more freely. We’ve only had one home game thus far – and it was delayed two hours for lightning – but once we opened gates, the students came in and filled the decks. The concept was met with excitement and I think that it will continue to grow and become a real gathering point for students.” – Brad Sutton, Senior Associate Athletics Director, SMU
